Project Reveal: New Old House

We’re excited to finally reveal project New Old House, a journey of turning a dated ’80s house into a modern sanctuary that blends elegance and functionality. We appropriately named this project the New OLD house, and the Before & After images might make you wonder if it is indeed the same home!

The scope of this project initially started as two bathroom renovations upstairs, and grew into renovating the entire main floor – kitchen, dining, powder bath, living room and laundry room.

Project Goals:

Create a functional, kid-friendly space for this busy family of four. Our clients wanted their new forever home to feel warm, inviting and layered with textures.

The palette for this project was inspired by the client’s love for nature. We used greens, blues and warm woods throughout. We paired the earthy tones with brass and black accents to create interest and depth.

The Kitchen

The previous kitchen was tiny and closed off. With removing the dining room wall, we were able to add in a kitchen island and open up the space significantly. It also allows natural light to flood into the dining room, making the entire space brighter. Finishing off the kitchen is beautiful custom cabinetry to meet all our client’s needs for storage.

BEFORE - Kitchen
BEFORE - Living Room

OK – but how WILD are these before photos?!

Now, the home is bright, airy and out of the ’80s. Our design centered around increasing the kitchen’s footprint and functionality. We raised the sunken living room up to create a continuous main floor living area and shifted the patio doors over for more kitchen space.

The large island adds in storage, while also providing a place for the kids to eat breakfast and hang out.  We had to work around a bulkhead above the kitchen sink, so we cladded it in wood veneer to make it feel intentional. Add in sconces, and it creates a perfect little kitchen moment.

In the living room, we kept the original wood burning fireplace, added in new built ins and updated the tile. New windows complete the main floor to let in all the beautiful south facing light.

Secret Kids Space

One of my favourite things we did in this project was make a space for the kids! As walls came down, we had space under the staircase that was either going to be hidden storage… or in this case, a hidden play zone for the kids!

The final two spaces on the main floor are the laundry room and the powder bathroom. We continued the LVP into the laundry room for a cohesive feel. Beautiful green cabinets, and stunning backsplash complete this pretty space.

The powder bath was drenched in dark blue.  And we converted the old pink (yes pink!) shower to an additional closet area for the clients.

This project is one for the books. We had amazing clients that trusted us throughout and a great team of trades that brought our vision to life. With this being one of my first large scale projects, it will always hold a special place in my heart!
