Playrooms should inspire creativity, be playful, and most importantly be functional. When you are designing a playroom, you need to think about how that space will work with your child now and in the future. A chic and functional playroom will play with colour, have sleek storage, and will have lots of space for kids to play or do their favourite activities.
Here are my tips on creating a functional and chic playroom:
1. Use kids' favourite colours through accents + rugs
Kids change their favourite colours and characters all the time. It’s best to stay with a neutral palette, and use smaller items to add in their favourite colours or characters.
In Aria’s playroom, we opted for a blush pink Cushy Couch to add in her favourite colour. It’s perfect to use as a reading nook, building forts, climb on and more.
When you ground a space with neutrals, colours become more versatile. I used this wallpaper from Livette’s Wallpaper to create an accent wall and to add in some colour. The muted blue tone adds interest and makes a statement when you enter the space.
Aria also loves dinosaurs right now, so I added in this cool print from BFF Print Shop that we can easily swap out when her interests change. I’m sure she would have loved a Paw Patrol mural, too – but that was NOT happening! ha
2. Smart Storage Solutions
Ah – the number one thing you need in a well-functioning playroom. We opted for this wall storage unit from Pottery Barn Kids, and love it. It’s customizable and you can add on sections as you go.
Open shelves display toys and allow kids to see them and then are more likely to play with them. While the drawers are key for legos and other toys with lots of pieces. This storage unit is also a piece that will grow with her as she gets older. It’s worth investing in items with longevity like this unit that can be used in multiple ways. 3. Create Zones
Creating zones in a playroom is key. Must have zones are open floor space for playing (duh!), a reading corner, an art/crafts area, and a parent’s favourite, the toy storage area. We also created a little spot for Aria to play dress up with some hooks and a little mirror.
There is a lot of open floor space for Aria to play, which allows her to play on her cushy couch and do all the physical things toddlers like to do. We also have an art easel for her drawing needs, and we are getting her an activity table that grows with her (again, longevity is key!) which will give her a space to colour and play lego.
I also added in an art rail to display her art, and so she can put her own little special touch on her space!
