Mixing metals is one of my favourite things to do in a space. It makes a space feel curated, while adding in depth and dimension. Whether you are looking for a modern, timeless or classic look, mixing your finishes adds visual interest and is a look that will last far beyond the current year.

There are a few tricks to making sure you are mixing the right metals. I am going to share with you today how to mix metals like a pro and which combinations are my favourite!

Mix Warm + Cool Metals

Metals much like paint colours come in warm and cool tones. Warm metals like brass and gold feel balanced and become more rich in color when accented with a cool tone, like nickel or chrome. Contrast is key when mixing metals. It makes a space feel intentional.

Bathrooms are a great place to play around with finishes. Between the plumbing hardware, the mirror, the lighting and the cabinet hardware – the options for combining are endless in a bathroom.

Choose a Base Metal

In our bathrooms I chose polished nickel as my base metal for the faucet and plumbing fixtures.  I love polished nickel as it mixes well with lots of metal finishes. After you choose a base metal, this is where you can play around with combinations of other finishes. I love brass and polished nickel together. It’s one of my favourite combinations – it’s timeless and chic, and they balance each other out perfectly.

Stick to Two Metals Max

You don’t want to go overboard with mixing metals. You want to make sure your space feels like there was intention and a plan behind the finishes. Sticking to one base metal and one accent metal for the perfect balance, especially in small spaces like bathrooms.

Black Metals Are Like Neutrals

Black metals are every metals friend! They mix well with brass, chrome, and nickel, and provide that contrast you need to make a space feel purposeful. If you are struggling to mix metals, black is an easy metal to mix with!

Favourite Metal Combinations:

  • Polished Nickel + Brass
  • Polished Nickel + Matte Black
  • Aged Brass + Matte Black
  • Matte Black + Brushed Nickel
  • Matte Black + Chrome
