How to Accessorize With Plants in Your Home

If you have been following me for a while, you know I adore a good plant. I love using them in my interior designs, and I LOVE having them in my own home. My plant collection has increased over the span of the pandemic, but there is good reason for that – plants actually do make us happier! They help bring the outdoors in, and we all know how good the outdoors can be for our soul.

Plants are also beautiful, vibrant pieces of home decor and they bring life to any room of your home. They add a hint of colour, texture and breathe fresh air into indoor spaces.  And there are so many variations of plants, that the design possibilities are endless. Which leads me to my first point, picking the right plant.

Choosing the right plant

With so many options out there, you must think through what type of plant you want. It can also be overwhelming if you are new to the plant parent life. Things to consider when buying a new plant:

  • the level of maintenance (high or low),
  • where you want to place it,
  • what the lighting is like in that spot (low light, direct light, etc),
  • size of the plant
  • and if you want something that flowers, makes a statement (trailing plants or large leaves) or is edible (i.e) herbs

Large plants are great for filling corners and for open spaces, such as Monsteras, Fiddle Figs, and Birds of Paradise. Smaller plants, such as a pothos, philodendron, or succulents are great on shelves or hanging from the ceiling.

Once you have determined your needs, do a bit of research or head to the store and talk to an expert on what would work in your space. Having a plan will make it less stressful when you’re out purchasing your new plant babies.

Where should you place your new plant?

Fill your empty corners.

Many homes have a spots in them where a piece of furniture does not make sense. Enter in floor plants!

We have a window-filled nook off the kitchen, and the corners seemed so empty before we put our snake plant in there. It adds height, fills in the corner, and is a pop of colour in a very neutral space.

My monstera fills in the empty space by our couches and side tables. It also helps draw your eyes to the window when you walk into the room.

Place them on shelves

Smaller plants or succulents are great additions to your #shelfie. Placing them on your mantles, bookcases and shelves is an effortless way to bring a new energy into your space. I have these plants on this built in by our tv, (mainly because they get good light), but they are also a great option to take up some real estate, and help make our living room feel cozy.

Display as a centerpiece

I love showing off my plants on our dining room and kitchen tables (and sometimes coffee table!). This cute planter is a knock-off of this one from CB2, and it looks beautiful on my kitchen table. Add in a marble Pothos, and it totally makes a statement on the table.

Hang 'em up.

If you have limited space in your home, use a cute macrame plant hanger to display your plants. A dramatic hanging plant like an ivy, or fern are perfect for these spaces. There are also so many cute hanging plant holders right now, I have two macrame ones I am hoping to install in the playroom…. whenever I get around to that room! ha. Hopefully soon friends….hopefully soon.

My Favourite Plants

  • Monstera – It’s my favourite plant… ours is getting a little wild with its growth, but that’s what draws me into them.
  • Snake Plant – The easiest plant to care for. I love them in a modern plant stand, as the straight lines compliment that of the planter. They add a touch of contemporary, and are great for low light rooms.
  • Philodendron – I love the leaf shape on a philo. They have heart shaped leaves that are just so beaufitul. I also love how they begin to trail over a planter for a sort of wild look. They will also climb if you give them a moss pole or something else to climb up.
  • ZZ Plant – Another low maintenance option. This one is on our office and gets limited light.
  • Birds of Paradise – I love the leaves on these plants. They make you feel like you are in a tropical paradise, and are not too bad to care for. They like at least 4 hours of bright light, and high humidity. I try and mist mine constantly since Alberta is so dry.
  • Lipstick Plant – I am still waiting for this one to bloom flowers, but its still a neat plant! It’s like a pothos and starts draping over the planter, with really cool leaves. I have forgotten about this plant a lot and… it seems to always make it through!
