4 Tips for Designing the Perfect Kids Space

Designing kids spaces can be fun, but they can also be challenging. Creating a space kids can grow into is the top request I get from my clients. No one wants to be re-doing their kids room year after year, although it is fun, it’s not practical for busy families. And if you remember from my Designing a Playroom blog post, kids change their minds on favourite colours, characters, and everything constantly.

With those ever-changing preferences, creating a space for your kids can be a tall order. So, to help you achieve the goal of a functional, but playful room, I rounded up my top 4 tips for designing kids spaces below.

No. 1: Invest in versatile pieces

Double duty furniture is ideal for kids spaces. A dresser can double as a changing table when you are in the infant stage, then revert back to its original purpose as they grow out of the diaper stage. Nightstands, beds and lighting are other items you can keep until they get older. Try to keep them in a neutral palette, and use colour in other areas of their room.

No. 2: Add patterns to make it playful

Patterns can add in that playful element to a space – which is what a kids room should have! Try adding patterns through bedding, wallpaper, or a rug like we did in Aria’s room to add dimension and energy to their room. A rule of thumb with patterns is to stick to 2-3 patterns maximum to avoid the room feeling chaotic or too busy. A good way to stay balanced with patterns is to choose one with a large pattern, one with a medium pattern, and one with a small pattern.

No. 3: Personalize kids spaces with Artwork

Artwork is a great way to bring in your child’s personality to their room. This is where you can add in their favourite colours, characters or objects to make the space feel like its theirs. We did an eclectic gallery wall in Aria’s room that mixed in a few of her favourite things (elephants, butterflies) with this abstract art print. By using framed prints, you can swap out the prints easily as interests change or as they grow.

No. 4 Smart Storage

Kids are messy. There will be toys, and books all over their room. Set your kid up for success by incorporating smart storage. A bed with built-in drawers underneath is especially great for smaller spaces and is something they will use for years.

Bookshelves will give them a place to display all their favourite books, shelves can be used to display toys or other items and keep them off the floor, and bins are great for containing all those stuffed animals
