Choosing the right wallpaper and a few of my faves!

Whether you are looking to add a pop of colour through an eye-catching accent wall or add in some texture, one thing remains true: wallpaper can truly transform a space. (see below!)

The last few years wallpaper has been making a comeback, and I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon. It’s an easy way to make a statement in a room (muted or bold!) and when used correctly it can give the illusion of space or emphasize an already large area. The key though is using the right wallpaper for your space. So, how do you choose the right wallpaper? Read on..

Choosing the right type adhesive

There are a few types of wallpaper adhesive you can get – unpasted, peel and stick and pre-pasted. Think about how long term or short term you want to keep the wallpaper in the space, and if you want to instal it or have the pros come in.

  • Unpasted – The traditional type of wallpaper which requires you to apply your own paste or adhesive to install. Unpasted is long-lasting, and timeless. It can be tricky to install, so best to find a professional to help you on this one.
  • Pre-Pasted – This type of wallpaper already has adhesive on it, and typically only requires water to activate it. It’s not as messy as traditional, and is removable in large strips, making it a good choice for spaces you may want to change in the future. (Aria’s room is the prepasted type!)
  • Peel & Stick – Very DIY Friendly as no water or paste is required. It’s easy to remove, so great for short term use.

Choosing Colours

Colour sets the tone in any room. When choosing your wallpaper, you need to decide if you want warmer tones or cooler tones (just like paint!) in your space. Softer and cooler tones suggest calm and tranquility, while dark or bold colours are striking and energetic.

To make a space seem larger, and the ceiling higher, pick colours with cool-colour backgrounds, like blues, greens or violets.

I have a botanical theme wallpaper in my laundry room, and it really makes the room feel bigger (and brighter as it has no natural light.

Choosing patterns and textures

Wallpaper comes in many patterns and texture and knowing what style or vibe you are looking for can help you make a decision. Stripes or vertical patterns will make the room appear taller.

Bold wallpaper makes a statement in any room. But, the downfall with bold is it can get outdated quickly. (Bold prints are great in small rooms like mudrooms or powder rooms). Delicate and neutral patterns will be longer lasting, and less likely to clash with furniture or other decor items.

Personally, I like a good neutral pattern and colour (surprise! ha). I like a wallpaper that is more timeless, such as the wallpaper in Aria’s room, where we could use it as her nursery, but it’s also a print she can grow into. Her wallpaper is neutral enough to add in pops of colour elsewhere, but still gives you that “wow” factor when you walk into the room.
