January… we start off excited for a new year and new goals. But by mid-January, like many others, I usually find myself needing a little boost of positivity to keep up that energy. The lack of sunlight is such a big one for me, and throw in a pandemic and January (or winter) seems to never end.
Your home should be your sanctuary. It should be a place that you can relax, recharge and most of all – be happy! There are many things you can add to your homes to instantly boost your mood and make it your happy place. Here are my favourite ways to use interior design or decor to boost my mood:
Buy Flowers... for you or for someone else.
If you’ve been following me on instagram, you know it was my birthday this past weekend and my husband, Joel got me some pretty amazing flowers (Lillies of course – my fave!).
Flowers add a pop of colour in the middle of winter, and remind us of spring and sunshine, and can instantly bring up your mood. Gifting flowers to someone else can boost BOTH of your moods – you’re feeling good about brightening their day, and they feel good with the beauty of flowers and gesture.
Use Sheer Window Treatments.
Let the light in! Use sheer window coverings, or light filtering cellular shades to still have privacy, but also allow natural light to filter in. Open your curtains right when you wake up, even if it’s still pitch black, so you notice the sun as soon as it rises.
Plants, plants, plants!
We all know I have a pretty solid collection of house plants. And there is a simple reason why….plants do make people happy! Plants bring the outdoors in. And nature is proven to have a positive effect on us.
I also love the pop of green plants add in my decor and the fact that they purify your air, too. There has also been research that just LOOKING at a plant can make you happy. So, my friends – go get the plants. If you don’t have a green thumb, succulents or a snake plant are a great starter plant. Add in some colour.
This doesn’t mean you need to paint your entire space a bright colour. Even with a neutral scene, small elements of colour can have a positive effect on you.
One of the most powerful interior design tools is colour psychology. It impacts the mood of the room more than any other factor. Blues tend to be more calming, while energetic colours like yellow and green are proven by science to boost your mood and increase productivity. So, add in a bright pillow, vase or a piece of artwork to add some colour in your home.
Get a diffuser.
We have been hearing lots about aromatherapy and its numerous health benefits. Our sense of smell can be powerful as certain scents can remind us of happy memories. Smells like lavender create a calming effect (also works to help toddlers settle at bedtime!), while citrus scents like grapefruit, tend to increase productivity and positive emotions.
And remember…your home is supposed to be your happy place, so add in those personal touches, favourite colours or elements that bring you joy (like Marie Kondo would say).
