Decorating and furnishing your home is no easy task. There are a number of things that go into a well-designed home, and while sometimes finding a good deal on some items is great, spending a bit more on important items can go a long way. With any budget, you can prioritize items to ensure the quality and longevity is there. I like to use this balanced approach when designing spaces for clients, to ensure they get the most bang for their buck, but while also not comprising quality on some items. Below are the 5 items I believe are worth the extra spend:
1. Sofas + Sectionals
Sofas are the one piece of furniture that you should definitely splurge on. From binging TV shows, entertaining, and the odd daytime nap, a comfortable sofa is a requirement. Sofas are one of the most used pieces of furniture in your home, and it’s important you invest in quality for longevity. A common request from my clients is to find a sofa or sectional that holds up with their kids, and their pets – which means I will usually find something with a durable, performance fabric option. The additional cost is worth it to keep your mental state calm if a spill happens (and spills will happen), as cheaper sofas will likely stain easier.
2. Dining Room Table
The dining room table is another piece of furniture that will be heavily used in a household. With it being your main gathering spot, opt for a sturdy, long lasting table. Even better, invest in a table that can extend for those larger gatherings. Solid wood or stone based tops are usually your best bet for holding up with heavy use.
3. Antiques + Vintage
4. Mattress + Bedding
Your body will love you for investing in a comfortable and supportive mattress. Better sleeps lead to better health. And I know, it’s not the most exciting thing to purchase, but it is worth the investment. There is a lot to consider when purchasing a mattress (sleeping positions, firmness, etc), so it’s best to pop into a store and try them out before you buy.
And while your mattress may be extremely comfortable, your space becomes even more restful with quality bedding. Think how great it feels to crawl into a hotel bed with amazing sheets? You should replicate that feeling in your own bed.
5. Chandeliers + Pendants
Lighting can really elevate your space. It’s usually one of the first things you notice in a room, and naturally creates a focal point. Splurging a bit more here can go a long ways as it will have a dramatic impact on your entire space. Many designers call lighting the jewelry of the home, and they’re right. You could just wear a basic black dress, but when you add a statement necklace or earring it really makes an impact. You should treat your lighting in the same way.
