As the leaves fall, it’s time to start thinking about bringing the outdoors in for the upcoming winter months. And it’s also time to change up your plant care routine for the new season.
I always try and incorporate some type of greenery into my client designs. Plants immediately add life, and adding them in for the winter will take away those drab, blah winter feelings.

Pump up the Humidity
Make sure you mist your plants more often as the weather becomes drier, especially if you have any of the tropical variety. The air becomes extremely dry in Alberta during the winter months, and plants need that extra mist. You can also run a humidifier to increase the moisture in the air. Not only are they good for plants, but for people, too!
Water Less
Plants growth really slows in the winter months with the shorter days, so they don’t require as much watering. Snake plants will sometimes not need water for 6 weeks! Talk about low maintenance! Make sure you check that the soil is completely dry before watering your plants.
Rotate your plants
Rotate your plants at every watering (you should be doing this throughout the year!) to achieve balanced growth on all sides of your plants. Plants always grow to the light, so if you rotate them to give them equal opportunity to light, you’ll have a really good looking (and happy) plant!
Skip the Fertilizer
Most house plants start to go into a form of dormancy over the winter months. Focus on just giving them the essentials like light and water, and save the fertilizer for the summer months when they are in full growth mode.
