3 Essential Items for Beautiful Nightstands

Your nightstand is a key element in your bedroom decor. It’s a highly functional piece, and can sometimes be a dumping ground for items like jewelry and electronics.

First things first, clear the clutter. Store your jewelry in a cute box or in a drawer, along with your other items that don’t need to be on your nightstand. You want to make your bedroom feel like a haven for the most restful sleep.

Once you have a clear nightstand, here are my 3 essential items for styling it:

1. A Light Source

A lamp or wall sconce are essential for bedroom tables. They add in ambience, and ground the nightstand in your space. Lamps or sconces are also the perfect item to unite your pair of nightstands. They create balance and symmetry, while also providing function.

Tip: consider scale and how much surface area you need on your nightstand. If you need a spot for water, a book, glasses, or phone, factor that in when choosing your lamp size. If you have a small nightstand, a wall sconce might be a better option to keep space available on your nightstand.

2. Natural Elements

You know I love adding in natural elements into a space. Natural elements bring in life and movement into your home. Add in plants, greenery, flowers, stone and wood objects to your nightstand to instantly add peace.

3. Personal Touches

This one is key in a bedroom. The bedroom is your haven, and your nightstand should have items on it that are YOU or mean a lot to you. This can be a personal photo in a cute frame, a keepsake from your travels, maybe a family heirloom that you can layer on some books. Something that makes you happy. Or in a kids space like below, an item with their favourite animal or interest to make it special for them.

A few more tips:

  • Layering is essential in any space. It creates depth and helps move your eye through the vignette. Start by placing the tallest piece, likely your art or light fixture, and ending with the smallest.  Layer one piece in front of another.
  • Group objects in odd numbers such as threes or fives. Odd numbers are visually pleasing to the eye.
  • Vary the heights of your objects. Use a tall lamp with shorter objects, to keep your eye interested.

And finally – don’t over style! Leave room for negative space – our eyes love it (and need it!).
